Amazon Launches Prime Service in Singapore

Amazon.com recently launched its subscription-based Prime service in Singapore on Wednesday. It provides customers access to fast delivery, streaming and even gaming, increasing the rivalry with Lazada in Southeast Asia.

Amazon decided to penetrate the Southeast Asian market by launching a free two-hour delivery service in the city, marking its first attempt to compete with Alibaba. However, the initial limited products categories left customers feeling disappointed, as it tries to battle head on with Alibaba- backed Lazada.

“We want to make the lives of customers living in Singapore better every day. Customers in Singapore have been enjoying ultra-fast delivery with Prime Now since July, and now, the introduction of Amazon Prime will take their shopping experience to the next level,” Jamil Ghani, vice president, Amazon Prime International.

Amazon will soon be charging S$8.99 per month after its free two-hour delivery on a S$40 minimum purchase in Singapore.

While introducing its membership promo, the company cut more than half of its threshold for free international to Singapore and shorten the delivery times, in hopes that the deal will attract more consumers to use its platform, wrote Reuters.

Amazon now venturing into handmade products

According to Fortune, Amazon will offer Handmade products through its two-hour delivery service Prime Now, which regularly delivers household convenience items that can be bought in drug stores.

The company is hoping to win orders from its competitor Etsy Inc.

Shoppers who were previous Etsy buyers didn’t expect the site could handle holiday sales or even offer free shipping. This year, Etsy has been offering tools to its merchant that will help their shoppers find items that are on sale, ship quickly or even offer free delivery.

According to EMarketer Inc, online shopping during the November-December season in the U.S. alone is estimated to reach at least $107 billion this year alone.
