Amazon plans to open its second robotics fulfillment center in the state of Louisiana. The new operations facility in Baton Rouge will create over 1,000 new, full-time jobs and provide employees with at least $15 per hour and comprehensive benefits.
In the new 820,000 square-foot fulfillment center, Amazon employees will pick, pack, and ship smaller customer items such as books, toys, electronics, and other household items.
The new Amazon fulfillment center will be located at the former site of the Cortana Mall in Baton Rouge which opened in 1976 as the largest shopping mall in the south.
Due to the retail collapse driven by the growth in online commerce, many anchor stores started to close up at the mall, including Macy’s, Sears, Dillard’s Clearance Center, and JCPenney. The end came in 2019 when the last tenants were asked to vacate the mall for good.
After the closing, local reports suggested Amazon was interested in the property. This week, the company confirmed it would be using the site for the new fulfillment center as demolishing had already started earlier this year.
“This is the one we’ve been waiting for. Amazon’s project is transformational, both for creating a thousand jobs and serving as a model of intentional economic development. It’s been a great team effort of state and local leadership to get this project in place. The blighted Cortana Mall will be reinvented into a modern logistics hub that will catalyze investment in the Florida Boulevard corridor and beyond.”President and CEO Adam Knapp of Baton Rouge Area Chamber
