In April, a report suggested that Amazon will hold its annual summer shopping sale in August, moving it from its traditional July timeslot.
Due to coronavirus pandemic enacted stay-at-home orders, shoppers quickly overburdened Amazon’s operations as consumers changed from buying locally to online.
To date, the company still has not fully recovered. Despite most states loosening virus-related restrictions, many orders continue to take up to a week to arrive, instead of the usual 1 to 2 days.
But the company is making progress in returning to pre-pandemic operations, and the Wall Street Journal reports it is moving toward allowing unlimited non-essential goods to be shipped again to its fulfillment centers.
And according to the report and people familiar with the matter, Amazon now plans to hold its Prime Day sale in September, moving it by two months.
Amazon Prime Day to Impact Holiday Sales?
This postponement should give Amazon and marketplace sellers plenty of time to stock for Prime Day, but it also places Prime Day much closer to the start of the holiday season.
Typically such a move could impact holiday sales as shoppers will stock up on deals sooner and spend less later.
However, these are strange times, so holiday sales are likely going to suffer far more from the economic impact the coronavirus has on people.
