Amazon & Walmart Still Leading eBay In The eCommerce Race – Consumer Trends Report
Jungle Scout have released their Q1 Consumer Trends Report where they have analysed 1000+ U.S. consumers. The report focuses on financial strain on businesses throughout the pandemic, and other eCommerce statistics.
eCommerce Trends
According to the report from Jungle Scout unsurprisingly Amazon is continuing their dominance, although customers are increasingly interested in purchasing through other platforms including social media channels.
Jungle Scout asked which online channels consumers had shopped at during Q4 of 2020 and created a table of the most popular by percentage. Of the people surveyed Jungle Scout was able to determine what the most popular eCommerce channels were.
- Amazon – 73%
- Walmart.com – 40%
- eBay – 18%
- Target.com – 18%
- Etsy.com – 9%
- Wish – 7%
- Facebook Shops – 5%
- Instagram Shop – 2%
When asked about where shoppers start their search when looking to make a purchase 74% said they first would turn to Amazon compared with 65% who would use a traditional search engine like Google or Bing. Once again highlighting that eCommerce sellers are losing out if they do not have at least some presence on the Amazon marketplace.
When talking about consumers and eCommerce it is impossible to ignore the impact of Amazon Prime, which undoubtedly adds to Amazon’s dominance. Of those that took part in the study 70% had an active Amazon Prime account. Interestingly however 38% of those that took part had an active Walmart+ account. We believe this could be a huge determining factor that the two leaders in the eCommerce space right now both have membership services, which will likely result in increased trade and loyalty.
Financial Stressors
Another huge factor in this report is that of financial stress and burden caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
56% of consumers said that they are living “paycheck to paycheck,” and 48% have experienced unexpected financial setbacks in the last three months.
73% also admit to becoming more conscientious of where they spend their money and 70% are looking for less expensive products when shopping. 43% of consumers are extremely or very reliant on a
government stimulus check.
Whilst the COVID-19 pandemic has been a huge driver for eCommerce success, it has also been a huge burden for many families across the U.S. and the world.
We highly recommend downloading the full 37 page Consumer Trends report from Jungle Scout. It is full of fantastic insight into the current state of consumer eCommerce.
