Australia Post Opens New Adelaide Parcel Facility in Time For Expected Record Christmas Volume

Australia Post has opened the Adelaide Parcel Facility, its first major dedicated parcel facility in South Australia, as a boost for local customers ahead of the Christmas season.

The facility covers more than 15,000 square meters and is Australia Post’s largest operational investment in South Australia.

It features an Australian-first machine able to sort small and large parcels simultaneously, which can process 8,000 parcels an hour and roughly 170,000 per day.

The new state-of-the-art facility at Adelaide Airport is set to change the way parcels are handled and delivered in South Australia heading into what will likely be Australia Post’s busiest Christmas season in its history.

Over 180 jobs have already been created at the new site, and 100 more casual team members will join the South Australian team in the lead-up to Christmas.

“We had more than 344,000 South Australian households shopping online in September, and we know how busy the festive season can be after last year’s record-breaking Christmas. This new facility will help us get those high volumes of parcels moving quickly and to people’s doors faster than ever before.”

Rob Clothier, Head of Operations SA (Deliveries)

In the coming months, the Adelaide Parcel Facility will ramp up its operations in conjunction with existing Australia Post processing facilities to continue serving customers throughout the Christmas season.

Australia Post Invests to Meet Rising Parcel Volume

The $31.4 million investment is part of Australia Post’s strategy to meet growing eCommerce demand, with $450 million invested into the network last year alone.

Last month, Australia Post announced it was building a new $82 million parcel facility in Perth which it expects to be operational by next Christmas season.

A record 52 million parcels were delivered throughout Australia in December of 2020, the biggest delivery month ever for Australia Post.
