eBay Expands Global Shipping Program for Indian Sellers

Last year, we highlighted that eBay has been busy in India driving cross-border sales. The company had launched a program called eBay Global Xpansion Program (GXP) that enabled Indian sellers with consumer-facing products to ship globally across 190 markets.

The eBay GXP program offers numerous additional features specifically for export-oriented businesses, such as market insights & planning, merchandise support, brand ownership protection, and many more.

It is designed to help eligible Indian-based sellers access markets globally by providing additional support services that will allow them to distribute their products everywhere.

But now, eBay has also expanded its regular eBay Global Shipping (EGS) program by partnering with Shiprocket X, a logistics company that offers services to Indian-based Amazon, Shopify, Etsy, and others as well.

This new partnership builds on the eBay EGS program, providing cost-effective and seamless cross-border shipping solutions to Indian eBay sellers to more than 160 countries globally.

As a part of this partnership, all eBay EGS sellers will be able to choose Shiprocket X as their shipping partner for eBay shipments, integrating their shipments to leading international markets such as the U.S., UK, Germany, Canada, Australia, and others.

“With this partnership, our vision is to enable cross-border ecommerce for numerous Indian businesses and help them expand internationally via eBay,” said Akshay Ghulati, Co-Founder, Strategy and Global Expansion, Shiprocket X.

“India is one of the top ten countries in cross-border ecommerce growth. At Shiprocket [X], one of our key objectives is to enable ecommerce in Bharat with the right tools to help Indian ecommerce sellers and traditional exporters scale their business globally.

“eBay Sellers will also have access to all-inclusive services such as carrier integrations, unified tracking from a single platform, shipment coverage and automated workflows.

“As an inaugural offer, eBay sellers will be getting special promotional pricing for their international shipments via Shiprocket X. With minimum documentation and hassle-free shipping, eBay sellers will be able to enhance their buyer experience with instant order updates to the end consumer.”

Why Is eBay India Important?

We generally hear very little from eBay in the U.S. about its global shipment program beyond what is happening in other major ecommerce countries such as the UK, Canada, or Germany.

While the domestic Chinese market is dead to eBay, it has built a cottage industry of small businesses that ship internationally to the U.S. and other markets. eBay has even partnered with Orange Connex Service Plan to build fulfillment centers in Germany, Australia, the UK, and the United States.

But India has been a bit below the radar.

While Walmart, Etsy, and Poshmark have embraced India, eBay seems to have taken a below-the-radar approach to the country.

Unlike China, there is a domestic business in India. Yet, the company is also heavily promoting selling overseas. In less than one year, it has expanded services tremendously for Indian small business sellers to reach global markets.

This is a mixed message from eBay. On one side the company wants to bring high-end buyers to the platform through its focus categories of luxury products, sneakers, parts & accessories, etc.

On the other side, it is allowing low-priced sellers on its primary domestic marketplaces that can easily undercut local prices.

A bit of a quagmire here for eBay during inflationary times while people are trying to make ends meet, and while it also tries to bring more unique products to the marketplace.
