eBay Israel Apparently Laying Off Dozens of Staff

Reports have emerged that eBay is laying of dozens of staff at its development center in Israel.

A person familiar with the situation told Calcalist, the terminations will mostly impact content-related jobs and not developers.

Earlier in the year the company hired about 100 new staff, but a recent management change and a possible disagreement with Israel’s tax system may have prompted the company to trim its workforce.

Israel is a often used by many U.S. companies as an external development base as the country’s workforce is highly trained through its school system and obligatory military service in advanced computing technologies.

The country also has a tremendous entrepreneurial spirit which has helped develop Israeli companies such as Waze become household tech names globally.

eBay has been developing advanced shopping tech for its marketplace sellers and while these cuts are unfortunate, they likely will not impact eBay’s continued investment in AI and AR technologies.
