The company’s journey into AI listing tools began with the launch of its initial version, allowing sellers to input basic information such as a title and category. They were then given the option to employ generative AI to automatically generate product descriptions.
eBay said the result was overwhelmingly positive, with around 30% of U.S. sellers adopting the feature, and over 95% choosing to utilize AI-generated descriptions, including those making edits. Notably, this feature garnered a remarkable customer satisfaction rate of over 80%, solidifying its status as one of eBay’s most well-received feature launches.
The company’s success in this initiative can be attributed to its steadfast commitment to integrating AI technologies such as machine learning, deep learning, computer vision, and generative AI into its platform. These advancements have significantly improved the efficiency and user-friendliness of the eBay experience for both sellers and buyers.
Furthermore, eBay emphasized its ambitious goal of providing sellers with a platform to create more detailed, accurate, and comprehensive listings, all while simplifying the listing process. Historically, achieving both these objectives simultaneously was a challenging proposition, but AI has now made it possible.
eBay Taking the Next Step
Building on the success of its first AI-based listing tool, eBay is now introducing an image-based “magical” listing tool. The groundbreaking feature enables sellers to capture or upload a photo of an item, prompting AI to swiftly generate item information, including titles, descriptions, product release dates, detailed categories, sub-categories, and even suggestions for listing prices and shipping costs.
This breakthrough tackles the common “cold start” issue that often discourages novice sellers, making the listing process effortless and instantaneous.
eBay’s latest AI tool can also be a game-changer for sellers of collectible trading cards, simplifying the process of providing the extensive details required for informed purchases. Identifying specific cards from the vast market of millions can be a daunting task, but eBay’s AI can efficiently provide the necessary information, streamlining the listing process.
Furthermore, eBay has also upgraded its background removal tool, recognizing the critical role that compelling, clean product images play in boosting sales. The enhanced tool enables sellers to create clearer product images, contributing to a more appealing shopping experience for buyers.
Its new image-based listing tool has already undergone successful testing through its employee beta program, with plans to release it to the public in the coming months.
With AI at the forefront of its strategy, eBay is paving the way for a future where ecommerce is more accessible, enjoyable, and efficient for everyone involved.
