According to Kroger Co.’s statement on Nov.3, the retail giant will soon add an apparel line in its superstores by next fall. The country’s largest supermarket chain will introduce a modern lifestyle apparel line exclusively in its 300 Fred Meyer and Kroger Marketplace branches.
The news came in after the company released an outline of its “Kroger Restock” initiative at an investor day back in October.
According to CNBC, the plan will consist of at least $9 billion over the next three years. Meantime, the company is looking to explore other strategic alternatives for its convenience- store business.
Kroger move into private label apparel
Creating its own apparel line is only a part of “Kroger Restock,” the company said on Nov. 3.
Kroger has sold apparel at Fred Meyer stores located in the Pacific Northwest and at Kroger Marketplace-branded locations in the past, but its attempt to create its own clothing line can be a great addition to even more profitable store brands throughout its branches.
“Our current customers alone present a huge opportunity for growth in apparel…Designing a new brand will give Kroger a chance to inspire and connect with our customers around apparel in a new way.” Kari Armbruster Corporate Affairs Communications Manager – Kroger
The name of Kroger’s apparel line has yet to be disclosed, although the company still offers several private label clothing brands such as Kids Korner, Curfew and GNW to name a few.
Kroger has added several private label products over the past few years, but most have been food products. Switching their gears to apparel lines could help them compete with other retail giants like Wal-Mart Stores Inc., wrote Fox Business.
Other retail chains such as Costco Wholesale Corp., Wal-Mart and Target Corp. have carried clothing apparel for the past few years, though most of their sales would still be coming from groceries.
