After co-founding and successfully leading their previous company Magento to a dominating market position, Yoav Kutner and Roy Rubin are announcing today the launch of the 1.0 version of OroCommerce, the first true open-source platform specifically designed for B2B eCommerce.

According to their press release, they are taking aim at the complexities of B2B eCommerce from the ground up to offer an out of the box solution for managing corporate accounts and buyer-seller relationships with multiple organizations, customizing catalogs, managing price lists for different customer groups, and automating business workflows for multiple customers and channels.

B2B eCommerce is actually a much larger slice of the eCommerce market with a turnover of about $780 million in comparison to $325 in consumer sales. According to Forrester Research, B2B will reach $1.1 trillion by 2020, while B2C eCommerce is forecast at $500 million.

As the pair did with Magento, they are working on an Enterprise Edition (EE) and an open source Community Edition (CE) for this new platform.

Of course at the moment this is still early in development, but if you have been running a highly modified Magento or similar eCommerce B2C platform for your B2B business, this is worth keeping an eye on.
