Last year, Amazon and other marketplaces took down thousands of COVID-related dubious remedies and fake products. But now it’s possible to buy an approved FDA saliva test on the platform.
The self-administered, non-invasive saliva kits are FDA authorized for use by both individuals with and without symptoms of COVID-19. The kits are now available in individual and 10-pack kits on Amazon.
DxTerity’s SARS-CoV-2 PCR-based test is the first at-home saliva test to receive Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) by the FDA for symptomatic and asymptomatic testing.
Asymptomatic testing is essential in limiting viral spread because a person can have COVID-19 without exhibiting any symptoms of the illness. The test detects the presence of viral genetic material but will not confirm immunity or detect antibodies.
A pre-paid express return shipping is included with the test. Results are available within 24 to 72 hours of sample receipt at the laboratory the company says in its listing.
Unlike other many other Amazon products, there is a strict refund policy that effectively eliminates refunds in most cases.
“The kit is not returnable once purchased and must be used within 60 days of purchase, refunds will be provided if the physician prescription is not authorized for any reason (such as for having emergency warning symptoms at sample registration) or if results are not provided due to fault of the shipment or testing process.”
The other interesting part of this listing is that Amazon is not the seller. Instead, the company is the seller and shipper, likely because it has to provide a prescription authorization as part of the test registration. However, it seems that Amazon could be the logistics partner down the road if all they manage is the fulfillment process while the company processes the required prescription authorization.
It will be interesting to see how this idea may spread. Will other companies that may be authorized to sell such a test also use Amazon and will Amazon eventually become a shipper, potentially offering a test the next day or with two-day delivery, instead of the 3 to 4 days it takes right now to get a test?
For those that want to check out the test, it is available at this link.
