USPS Domestic Service Disruptions

USPS Service Status on Domestic Services and Shipments – Updated on 11/28/2022

Here is our list of known disruptions and suspensions of USPS domestic services based on information the Postal Service provides to the public and in Industry alerts.

We may also include problems reported in the media if they significantly impact Postal Service operations in an area. This often includes weather or natural disaster-related disruptions.

For the purpose of this information, we consider “domestic” to include shipments in the contiguous United States, as well as destined to Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, Virgin Islands, Guam, and any other US territory.

Also, military and diplomatic mail disruptions will be included, if USPS is made aware of issues. The Postal Service does not actually deliver the mail outside the US once handed over to the military for international transport.

This information was last updated on 11/28/2022. This latest update only removed suspensions or closures (Puerto Rico, Georgia, and North Dakota).

Impact of Covid-19 on USPS Operations Today

During the height of the Covid pandemic, USPS operations were severely impacted by workers calling in sick or social distancing measures that had to be implemented at sorting and retail facilities.

There have been no known widespread reported challenges in the USPS system that affected deliveries of mail and packages.

Holiday Season Temporary Price Increases

While not a service disruption, customers should be aware of temporary peak season price increases USPS implemented on October 2. These will last until early January and affect retail and commercial mailers alike.

First Class Mail Service Standard Adjustments

On October 1, 2021, USPS enacted its new First Class mail service standards but decided to delay the implementation of this new service standard on First Class Package Service (FCPS) shipments until after the holidays last year. Since May 1, 2022, the new service standard applies to FCPS shipments.

Retail Ground and Parcel Select Service Standard Adjustments

On August 1, 2022, USPS introduced new service standards (estimated delivery times) for Retail Ground and Parcel Select Ground packages in the contiguous United States. Please see this post for more details.
