WooCommerce major update 3.0 coming in April

Last night WooCommerce announced they will be re-versioning WooCommerce 2.7 as WooCommerce 3.0 and releasing it on April 4, 2017

Based on internal discussions and feedback from 3rd party developers on new features of the update, the anticipated launch of 2.7 was moved back by a few weeks to address some bugs and give developers more time to update their plug-ins to be ready.

The reason for changing the versioning is that WooCommerce has decided to adopt the SemVer method which dictates as follows:

  • MAJOR version when you make incompatible API changes
  • MINOR version when you add functionality in a backwards-compatible manner
  • PATCH version when you make backwards-compatible bug fixes

This is a welcome change as it will decrease confusion about future updates and how they impact store owners and developers.

And now we know that WooCommerce 3.0 is truly a major update and may break some functionality for operating stores that are dependent on 3rd party plug-ins. So check with your 3rd party plug-in developer on compatibility with 3.0.

At eSellerCafe we caution that with any major update like this, we highly suggest you first update a beta or staging site that is a clone of your existing site and test out all functions to ensure that they are working correctly.

We also cannot stress enough that if it isn’t broken, there is no reason to quickly fix it and you may want to wait for a patch version or two before taking a live site to WooCommerce 3.0.x
